Data Center Relocation: Boston to Buffalo
Problem
Specialty Transport Solutions International (STSI) faced the complex challenge of relocating a high-value data center, worth over $50 million in equipment, from Boston, Massachusetts, to Buffalo, New York. This project involved a complete closure of the Boston facility, requiring meticulous planning to avoid disrupting the client's critical business operations. The relocation demanded precise timing, as systems needed to be powered down, moved approximately 450 miles, and made fully operational in Buffalo with minimal downtime. The sensitive, high-value servers required specific environmental conditions during transport to prevent damage, and the project had to accommodate last-minute schedule changes, adding significant complexity. The ultimate success of the project highlights the adaptability and efficiency of our premium data center migration services.
Task
We were responsible for executing an eight-phase relocation project over three months. The task involved powering down and uncabling devices in Boston on specific dates, packaging them, individually wrapping and protecting each piece of equipment, transporting it to Buffalo, unloading, re-racking, and re-cabling the devices at the client's pace. All phases had to align with the client's strict schedule, with each conducted primarily after hours and on weekends to minimize disruption to normal business operations.
The project required coordination of multiple teams, specialized equipment, and rapid adaptation to scheduling shifts.

Solution
Our team implemented a comprehensive and adaptable approach to meet the client's needs. We deployed a team of approximately 25 skilled technicians, split between Boston and Buffalo, with dedicated site foremen at each location to oversee operations. After the client powered down the equipment, our technicians un-racked, uncabled, wrapped, and prepared the servers for transport using specialized rolling carts and air-ride trucks. The equipment was transported in climate-controlled trucks maintained at 70°F with low humidity to safeguard the servers' integrity during transport. Team drivers executed expedited shipping, departing Boston at 1PM on Fridays or Saturdays and arriving in Buffalo on the same day, by 2 or 3 AM. Our Buffalo team immediately began unloading, re-racking, and re-cabling, preparing the equipment for the client's technicians to power up. Our flexibility was critical as we accommodated last-minute schedule changes, such as phase delays of up to two weeks, without complaint, adjusting logistics and personnel accordingly. By optimizing our processes, STSI achieved high efficiency, reducing downtime and streamlining operations throughout the project.

Result
The eight-phase project was completed seamlessly over three months, with all equipment successfully relocated and fully operational in Buffalo within the client's specified timeline. The Boston data center was closed without issue, and the Buffalo facility was up and running by Monday mornings following weekend moves, ensuring no disruption to the client's business operations.
The high-value equipment was transported without incident, thanks to careful handling and climate-controlled trucks. The efficiency of STSI's process, including the rapid turnaround times and adaptability, resulted in significant cost savings throughout the project, enhancing value for the client.
The client expressed complete satisfaction with the project outcome, resulting in the client establishing an ongoing partnership with STSI for additional projects. Positive client feedback underscored appreciation for schedule reliability, and cost-effective approach.
